Maskwa Expansion update

OK, if you haven't been by to have a look, you should do so. The building has now been turned
over to Maskwa by the contractor - a few minor fix-ups and cleaning and we can start
to move in - probably middle of February.

If you haven't see the artist' s drawing of the new facility, click here. The floor plan pdf
files can be viewed by clicking here and here.

Also photos showing the construction progress can be viewed at New Building.

Security Policy - Boathouse

In order to better maintain the security of the boathouse and its contents the following policies
have been established and are effective in the spring of 2009:

     1.    There will be two separate keys for the boathouse:
                    1. The South Bays will contain all club boats.
                    2. The North Bay will contain privately owned recreation boats, racing kayaks and canoes.

     2.     The key for the South Bays shall be provided to coaches and individuals only as
determined by the Head Coach and Paddling Director.

     3.     The key for the North Bay shall be provided to the parents of paddlers, (or Masters Paddlers) who
own boats contained therein and who request a key as determined by the Head Coach and
             the Paddling Director.

     4.     The key for the North Bay shall be provided to owners of boats contained therein provided
that all rental fees have been paid in full.

     5.     Any of the above keys may be provided to other board members or volunteers under
             special circumstances.

     6.     In order to minimize loss of keys, keys will be issued only upon payment of a
security deposit of $25 and signing of the appropriate form. All keys shall be returned at
the end of the season and the deposit returned. Loss of keys or failure to return ( unless
the key is required to be retained for the entire season with good reason) will result in
forfeiture of the deposit. A new key can only be issued upon repayment of the deposit. In
the event that several keys must be issued to one person, ie. House and Grounds Director, the $25
deposit shall cover all keys issued.

      7.    All keys issued are for the sole use of the consignee and are not to be loaned to others
under any circumstances. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in forfeiture
of the key and return of the deposit.

      8.    Members who wish to use  personal  racing canoes or kayaks (North Bay) in off hours (ie. when
coaches are not present), may do  so if they have obtained a key. Athletes under the age of
13 must be under the supervision of a parent and wear an approved PFD.
Whenever boats are taken out of the boathouse during off hours, the boathouse must be
locked while boats are on the water and again before leaving the club. Club boats (canoe
and white water kayaks) may not be removed from club property and may be used only on
            Kearney Lake.

      9.   All persons obtaining keys to the boathouse and signing the key loan form shall agree to
comply to all the above regulations, and in so doing, waive all responsibility for the Club
for any accident which may occur during the use of the boats. Any Club boats which may
be damaged during this time shall be repaired by the key holder at their expense.

RECREATION CANOES Needed
This year Maskwa will be initiating a Recreational Canoe day program for those children
ages 8-12.

Currently we have only one such canoe and are in need of two more - if you have a canoe that you would like to donate, loan,
or sell (at a very reasonable cost!) to the club, please contact Dan Dugie at dan_julie.dugie@ns.sympatico.ca

MASKWA COMMUNICATIONS
Help us to provide you with "Instant Info".
In order to improve communications to all the members, we propose to send out future bulletins on club events, regattas, newsletters, etc. by email.  You are all invited to provide your email address to: maskwainfo@eastlink.ca
Thanks!

Members and Guests
Please be reminded that each member is issued 2 guest passes which can only be used once. Additional guest passes may be purchased for $4 per person or $10 per family. Guests with passes may be admitted up to 3 times a year and then must take out a membership.

Hey, Maskwa Members and Friends!
Here are a couple of easy ways you can help us raise funds:

The next time you are in Boston Pizza on Parkland, you can leave them the receipt for your purchase and tell them it is for Maskwa. We get 5% of the value (10% at the Bayers Lake store!). Tell your friends.
Got a bunch of bottles gathering dust in your basement??  Just take them to Tanners, 6393 Bayne Street, and tell them the $$ are for the Maskwa account. Easy, eh!

BIG News
At a special ceremony held at Maskwa on Saturday, April 14, 2007, the Province of Nova Scotia officially donated $300,000 to the club towards our major expansion.
Back row: Commodore John Moore, Vice Commodore Sean O'Connor, Councillor Debbie Hum, Ministers Barry Barnett and Len Goucher (holding the cheque), Mayor Peter Kelly, Councillors Gary Meade and Gary Martin. Front row: Councillor Mary Wile, future Olympians Michael and Kayleigh O'Connor, and former MLA, current neighbour and strong supporter Mary Ann McGrath.
A huge thanks to everyone responsible for this big step forward to the realization of our goal.

<> Starting in the current year, 2006/07, Maskwa would like to recognize individuals and groups in our club who have, by hard work and determination, realized and achieved a level of excellence above and beyond the ordinary. This page will be kept up to date and new achievements will be posted as they happen. We hope that this list will  serve as an inspiration to all those who come after them. Click on the                                            "Winners Circle" to view the page.

     Maskwa Development
THE MASKWA STORY

You are probably aware that Maskwa is in the process of planning a major expansion to our club facilities. In order to provide information to our potential sponsors and funding agencies, as well as the general public, we have prepared a document entitled "The Maskwa Story".
Click Here to view a copy of the document.

We have had a professional drawing prepared of the proposed new building. Check it out!

We have just received a new drawing showing our proposed development plan - have a look!

A significant feature of Maskwa's plan involves the development and improvement to the trail system that exists between Kearney Lake and Charley Lake. See associated story and trail map.

CAUTION!
Our City Councillor has received a number of complaints from residents on Saskatoon Dr. about people speeding. Recognizing that not everybody driving on Saskatoon Dr. is a Maskwa member, please take extra care to keep to under the speed limit (40 kph would be good). There is also a deaf child living on the street.
Thank you, Maskwa Board of Directors.
